How to Cook and Eat in Chinese
Published in Paperback by Random House Trade Paperbacks (April, 1972)
Author: B. Y. Chao
Average review score:

Just great...
For anyone who wants to learn how to cook Chinese food, this is one of the classics. Written in the late 40's by a Chinese woman doctor, this is the home-style cooking of Anhui province (near Shanghai) adapted for the American home cook. Anhui food is considered "oily but generous in portions", and the protein-based nature of the recipes may seem a bit excessive for those who've gotten used to the spartan usages of contemporary America. Also Ms. Chao's puckishly imperfect English and frequent coinages sometimes get in the way -- I puzzled over the term "leaking ladle" until I found out it meant "slotted spoon", which is what I had been using. Still, she coined the term "stir-fry"...what more do you want?

I hope this book comes back into print...I've almost worn out my current copy!

32 Years Of Good Cooking
I received the hardcover "How to cook like a Jewish Mother" in 1969, (copyright 1969) at my engagement party.
I have used this book constantly throughout the years - the directions are simple, the results delicious and the recipes are very easy to make. I am still married to the same man and have four sons who still love my cooking.
This cook book made a wonderful Jewish cook out of newly converted Jewish girl.

How to Make Quick Appetizers
Published in Hardcover by Boston Common Press (01 April, 2000)
Authors: Cook's Illustrated Magazine, Christopher P. Kimball, John Burgoyne, Jack Bishop, and Editors of Cook's Illustrated Magazine
Average review score:

Great little book
We love to entertain, and the biggest issue is having too much to do on the big day.The ideal meal, in our minds, starts with a couple of fabulous appetizers (along with a nice glass of wine). The "hitch", however, is that a couple of knockout appetizers often takes a half day's time. This little gem of a book is fully meets our needs: the Green Goddess Dip & Crudites, Honey-Baked Brie Wrapped in Phyllo, Cocktail Crab Cakes, and Warm-Spiced Pecans with Rum Glaze are all easy, make-ahead dishes and are "lick the plate" good.

Not bad for less than [price]!

How to Write, Publish & Sell Your Own Aviation Books
Published in Paperback by Tri-Pacer Pr (March, 1998)
Authors: Chevy Alden and Richard Cook

Make Your Flying Deductible
As a pilot (SEL, gliders, hang gliders and paragliders) and a skydiver (D-454), I love this book. We need more books on flying and this book will show you how. My first book took eight years (The Parachute Manual, 590 pages, 8.5 x 11, 2,000 illustrations) off and on (mostly off) as I wrote a column for Parachutist magazine. That book gave me my start. My next book was the first book on hang gliding and it did so well I was able to move back to California and buy a home in Santa Barbara. Today, many of my books are still on aviation.

This book reveals how to research, write, edit, typeset, finance, print, price, promote, market and sell your book. Best of all, it is specific to aviation books. Chevy Alden has done an excellent job. Now you can write about what you love to do, get paid for it and deduct your expenses. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com.

funny but true
lorne cook's book is going to make someone in this world mad.... in fact not just someone, everyone. there is not a person in this world that will not take offense to something that he has written. will you be offended when he comments on the stupidity of pop culture icons or when he idolizes star trek? my suggestion is that you buy the book and find out for yourself.

I Hear America Cooking: The Cooks and Recipes of American Regional Cuisine
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (June, 1997)
Author: Betty Fussell
Average review score:

I Hear America Cooking
Author Betty Fussell proves that the way to America's heart is through its stomach in I HEAR AMERICA COOKING. In addition to a section-by-section review of the cuisine of every region of the U.S.with a tempting array of recipies to try, this book shows how the many different cultures that are part of this country have, like the elements of a good meal, maintained their unique flavor while making up an exciting and memorable whole. This is one cookbook that will interest even people who don't cook but love U.S. history or sociology. It's similar to Jeff Smith's FRUGAL GOURMET ON OUR IMMIGRANT ANCESTORS, in highlighting "Grandma's Recipes"--regardless of where Grandma's ancestors came from--but Fussell adds more spice to her presentation by putting regional specialties in the overall context of American cuisine.
